Clan Douglas Gathering - 2014

Information

Clan Douglas Gathering - 2014

Plans are in hand to hold a Clan Douglas Gathering in Scotland in 2014.

The Gathering will be was held 30th June - 6th July 2014, following the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn

A range of activities are proposed. We welcome suggestions as the what and where these might be. Until numbers are known, events and activities cannot be firmed up, but there will include castle visits and opportunities to meet senior Douglas leaders (We have no Chief!).

This group has been established to enable ideas to be discussed, dates to be set, and an organising committee to be established.

So let us know what you think!

Douglas Clan Gathering in 2014

The Homecoming Scotland 2014 events program will be themed around ancestry and the Scottish Government's Years of Focus (food and drink, active, creative and natural). Making the announcement, Fergus Ewing, MSP, Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism said "In 2014 Scotland will welcome the world as we stage two of the biggest sporting events - The Commonwealth Games and The Ryder Cup. This momentous year also sees Scotland's next year of Homecoming, giving people even more reason to be in Scotland and to extend their stay".

This is an opportunity for Clan Douglas to have a Scottish Gathering - the first ever. It might be an opportunity to launch a Clan Douglas Heritage Trust, to enable us to promote and advance the education of the public in the history, traditions and music of the Clan Douglas. It would seek to preserve and make widely known the enormous contribution that members of the Clan Douglas have made, and are still making, in politics, medicine, literature, music, sport, exploration and other forms of scientific endeavour, military campaigns and many other fields. It would ensure that their achievements are not forgotten, not only through the printed word but also through the preservation of manuscripts, artefacts, buildings and other tangible links. It also promotes the continuing contribution of Douglases in these areas.

Please let me know your views on a Clan Douglas Gathering, and what you would like to see happening at such an event. A daily programme of visits to castles, etc, has now been announced, but we still have to decide what evening events should happen.

2014 is also the anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, and the probable date of the referendum on Scottish independece.

Mary,

Affordable accommodation is difficult to find in June, apparently, so I am looking at July - probably between 6th and 14th July 2014.

I am awaiting responses from the Scottish tourist board (now called VisitScotland, and Historic Scotland.

I also want to talk to the Earl of Morton, the Dukes of Hamilton and Buccleuch and the Earl of Home to gain their support.

Do you have any photographs from 2009 that I could use?

William

It is a lot of fun, we had quite a few small group trips in 2009 to Douglas castles and marched with our clans up the royal mile together.. Douglas's came from all corners of the world! So great to meet so many Douglas's from all over the world! Does anyone have the dates of The Gathering yet in Scotland? The sooner they release them, the easier it is to plan a trip and the more will come! :)

Paulette,

Thank you for your interest in the Gathering.  I am involved with the Clan Maclean Gathering this month, so although the much more important Douglas Clan Gathering is in my mind, I am not able to take things forward much just now.

One thing that is exercising me is what to call it:

Clan Douglas Gathering

Douglas Clan Gathering

as above with 2014 there somewhere?

International Clan Gathering - variants of?

I would be interested to know what you think.

Clan Gregor, Clan Munro and Clan Macrae have all announced that they will be holding Gatherings in 2014.

Looks like a busy year for the clans.

I have been talking to a hotelier, and am informed that the week of the anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn is also the week of the Highland Show, and so room prices are going to be high.

That, I think, rules out the week of 23rd - 29th June.

The following week is traditionally the week of the Royal Visit to Scotland.  All 'senior' members of the Douglas family are likely to be involved, so if we want to meet them, they might well be busy elsewhere.  For example, Alexander Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 16th Duke of Hamilton, is the Premier Peer of Scotland and Hereditary Keeper of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and has relevant responsibilites.

That also may not be a good week.

Definitely!  Le's do it!  if we're to recognize Bannockburn as a pivotal part of our history, then why not June 24 or within the week of that?  This ties into the plans already announced for Bannockburn 700 celebrations (I'm not a fan of war - but this re-enactment is part of our history!)...   the official clan gathering is scheduled for July 11 – 13.  Not great for prices - height of season - but can't be helped - we've not even a Chief so are but a small part.  Commonwealth Games are at the end of July... for anyone who wants to stay longer....  Would love to have us all "sign in" to a huge ancestry "tree" - let's see where we all ended up!!

Great idea Beryl the more tests, the greater chance we'll have to lock down our USA roots, hope to to meet you.

Making conections

The more information you can give about the people you mention, the more chance there is of someone else connecting with your family.

Dates and places of births, deaths and marriages all help to place families.

Professions also help.

'My great-grandmother mother was a Douglas from Montrose' does not give many clues to follow up! But a bit of flesh on the bones makes further research possible. But if we are told who she married, what his profession was and where the children were baptised, then we can get to work.

Maybe it is time to update the information in your profile?
